Position Focus:

Reporting to the Chief Curator, the Robert L. Solley Curator of Prints and Drawings oversees the department of Prints and Drawings at the Yale University Art Gallery, including a collection that numbers in excess of 50,000 objects ranging from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century. The Solley Curator will position the department to serve the Yale University community as well as the larger public, and enhance the outstanding international profile of the collection. The Solley Curator will be responsible for managing all aspects of the department and collection of prints and drawings: planning exhibitions, programs, and publications; conferring on standards for collection care, preservation, conservation, and display; initiating research on acquisitions, loans, and on the permanent collection; overseeing the print study room; fielding public inquiries; assuming stewardship and donor cultivation responsibilities; and supervising the departments curatorial and support staff and student affiliates. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to connoisseurship, academic engagement, research, and publication; be an acknowledged expert in some field of the graphic arts, and be an outstanding collaborator with the Gallerys curatorial, conservation, and education departments, as well as with professional colleagues at the University.

Essential Duties of Position
1. Responsible for the presentation of the permanent collection of prints and drawings to the public and access to the collection through exhibitions, installations, the Gallerys website, class support, publications, and lectures. Develops and implements interpretative strategies in collaboration with the department of Education and other appropriate YUAG departments.
2. Oversees the care, orderly storage, use, and cataloguing of the collection of prints and drawings. Develops a close partnership with the Conservation department to ensure proper preservation and remedial care of the collection, including treatment and assessment of objects requested for loan exhibition.
3. Formulates and implements a strategy for developing the collection through acquisitions, both by purchase and gift. Cultivates relationships with interested and knowledgeable members of the Governing Board and, as relevant, Yale faculty as part of the assessment of collection strengths and weaknesses, needs and priorities.
4. Manages the Department of Prints and Drawings and the James E. Duffy Study Room, supervising a curatorial colleague, departmental assistant, technician/preparer, fellows and interns, and bursary students. Establishes and implements the priorities for the department in consultation with the Chief Curator and the Director. Assumes responsibility for the departmental budget and for exhibition and other project budgets.
5. Encourages and facilitates the use of the collection for teaching and research.
6. Advances scholarship in the field of the graphic arts. Conducts in-depth cataloguing research into the collection and ensures that the records and interpretation of the collection are accurate and reflect current scholarship. Teaches, lectures, and engages the public on the collection and in the curators area of expertise.
7. Serves as an ambassador for the YUAG and the Department of Prints and Drawings, establishing and fostering relationships within the field of the graphic arts and with curators of prints and drawings worldwide.
8. Participates actively in fundraising and collection development through contact with collectors and donors and through assisting in grant writing.
9. Contributes to the formulation and implementation of the Gallery's mission through active involvement in discussions with the Director, Chief Curator, other curators, and other leadership staff.

Essential Duties

1. Serves as head of the curatorial department and manages its budget, activities, and staff. 2. Supervises and directs curatorial management of the collection, including its care, display, accession, and scholarly cataloguing. 3. Promotes knowledge of the collection through publications, exhibitions, installations, and teaching. 4. Determines priorities for department and its collection including teaching, acquisitions, exhibitions, publication, and conservation. 5. Determines the content of exhibitions, installations, and publications and directs their execution. 6. Develops a collection strategy to enhance, broaden, and expand the collection through gift and purchase. 7. Raises funds for exhibitions and acquisitions and stewards Governing Board members, donors, collectors, students, and faculty. 8. Teaches and lectures on collection and the area of expertise. 9. Represents the curatorial department on Gallery and University committees; represents the Gallery and University to a local, national, and international community to promote the institution and its collection. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Ph.D in Art History plus at least eight years of related experience including a substantial record of major exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and donor stewardship, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated a keen eye and broad knowledge of the techniques and history of the graphic arts as well as of professional museum practices.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Desire and ability to build relationships and work effectively and collaboratively across departments at the Art Gallery, with colleagues at the University and in the community, and across the field nationally and internationally.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated success in leadership and in establishing and implementing policies and procedures to achieve objectives.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Lucid writing and strong public speaking skills, coupled with an interest in teaching and mentoring students and younger colleagues.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Fluency in at least one European language is desirable.
